Conserving our indigenous landscapes
Fully Permitted
KGR is permitted, in terms of the provisions of the Nature Conservation Ordinance 1974 (Ord 19 of 1974) (Section 65), issued by Cape Nature from the Department of Forestry & Fisheries, to collect, grow and sell protected flora.
Nursery
our coast
KGR operates a nursery where native plants from Namaqualand are grown. We offer a wide variety of endemic plants with different conservation statuses. These statuses vary from least critical to critically threatened. Plants are for sale to our clients and contribute to diversity in rehabilitated areas.
Ongoing trials in the nursery enables us to provide valuable information to clients on plant behaviour.
the soil
The prevailing strong southerly winds along the West Coast presents the greatest challenge. After topsoil is stablilised, seeds from indigenous plants are sowed during winter months. Seedlings from indigenous species, native to the area, are replanted during winter months.
Indigenous dried seeds are for sale from our nursery, and can be mixed to client’s preferences.
Maintenance
friendly
Rehab equipment that served their purpose are brought back to our maintenance workshop where employees see to repair work, where and if possible. Not all equipment can be salvaged, but this practice leads to a huge cost saving for our client.
Search & Rescue
is key
Before mining takes place, search and rescue teams remove endangered and vulnerable plant species.
KGR relocates these plants to suitable areas.
KGR rescues these species and relocates them to:
- portions of the survey area; or
- other immediately adjacent areas which will not be mined, or
- in mining areas during concurrent rehabilitation.
Records of co-ordinates of transplants are kept and KGR keep an eye on their relocation success.
Alien Removal
control
KGR works with an Invasive Alien plants management plan. These aliens are removed and alien density are noted for future removal.
